Quick answer

Two very different problems share this symptom: the system froze and the phone stopped responding to everything, or the layer that reads touch is faulty while the phone keeps running underneath. Start with the forced restart (Solution 1), which clears most freezes. If it comes back, the phone is fine and you need to find what froze it: use safe mode (Solution 5). If after the restart the screen still lights up and shows notifications without reacting to your finger, the problem is touch - clean the screen and remove the protector (Solution 2) and map the dead zones (Solution 6). A screen that will not light up at all is a different problem, in the display or the battery.

Android Screen Not Responding to Touch: How to Fix It

What causes this problem

  • A momentary system freeze, usually caused by an app that used up all the memory and brought the interface down.
  • Dirt, grease or moisture between your finger and the glass, which interrupts the electrical reading of the touch.
  • A badly fitted, very thick or bubbled screen protector, and cases that press on the edges of the glass.
  • Overheating, which makes the phone throttle itself and sometimes ignore commands until it cools down.
  • A recently installed app with screen overlay or accessibility permissions, which blocks touches without warning.
  • A physical fault in the digitiser after a drop, pressure in a pocket or water ingress, which usually shows up as a dead strip in one area of the screen.
Before you begin
  • Check that the screen lights up. A dark screen with no reaction is a display or battery problem, not a touch one, and this guide will not solve it.
  • Call your own number from another phone. If the device rings or vibrates, the system is alive and the problem is only the touch layer or a frozen interface.
  • Take off the case and the screen protector and wipe the glass with a soft dry cloth. Do this before changing any setting.
  • Dry your hands and the screen thoroughly. A wet finger, very dry skin and gloves all stop the touch from registering on practically any device.
  • If the phone was dropped or got wet shortly before the problem started, keep that in mind: it changes the diagnosis and may point straight to a repair shop.

Solutions, in the order to try them

1Force a restart by holding the buttons

This is the first step because it clears the overwhelming majority of cases and deletes nothing. A forced restart cuts power to the system without relying on the screen, which matters when you cannot tap anything. It is different from shutting down through the menu: it acts at the hardware level.

  1. Hold the power button together with volume down for about ten to twenty seconds, without letting go.
  2. Keep holding even if a menu appears on screen, until the phone goes dark and shows the manufacturer's logo.
  3. If that combination does nothing, try the power button alone for thirty seconds, then power together with volume up.
  4. If the phone has no removable battery and nothing happens, charge it for fifteen minutes and try again: a very low battery prevents the restart.
  5. Once it is back, test the touch in several parts of the screen before moving on.

2Clean the screen and remove the protector and case

A phone screen works by reading the electricity in your finger, and any layer or dirt in between interferes with that reading. A bubbled protector, an overly thick shield or a case that squeezes the edge of the glass are frequent causes and easy to rule out, especially when only one part of the screen misbehaves.

  1. Take the case off completely and test the touch near the edges, where cases usually press.
  2. Peel off the screen protector, even if it looks well fitted, and test again.
  3. Wipe the screen with a microfibre cloth lightly dampened with water and dry it well, with no neat alcohol or cleaning products.
  4. Wash and dry your hands: grease and hand cream leave a layer that fools the sensor.
  5. If touch returns without the protector, the shield was the culprit and a thinner one is worth the swap.

3Confirm the system is alive under the frozen screen

This test separates the two scenarios and decides the rest of the guide. If the phone reacts to calls, alarms and notifications but ignores your finger, the system is running and the problem is in the touch layer or in a screen frozen on top of it. If it reacts to nothing, the whole system has locked up.

  1. Call your number from another phone and see whether the screen changes or the device vibrates.
  2. Press the power button once: if the screen goes off and on normally, the system is responding.
  3. Press a volume button and see whether the volume bar appears on screen.
  4. If you have a USB mouse or keyboard and an adapter for the phone's port, connect it: many devices accept it and you can navigate without touch to rescue your data.
  5. If none of this works and the screen is lit and stuck, go back to Solution 1 and hold the buttons for longer.

4Let it cool down and charge before going further

A very hot phone throttles itself on purpose for protection, and in that state the screen goes sluggish or ignores touches. A critically low battery causes the same effect. This step is not wasted time: touch often comes back on its own once the temperature drops.

  1. Take the case off, get out of the sun and leave the phone somewhere cool for fifteen to twenty minutes.
  2. Do not put it in the fridge or in front of a freezer vent: condensation will ruin it.
  3. Put it on charge with the original charger, preferably with the phone switched off.
  4. Close games and navigation apps before using it again, as those heat the phone the most.
  5. If touch fails every time the phone gets hot, that points to a hardware problem that only gets worse over time.

5Boot into safe mode to rule out apps

Safe mode starts Android with only what came from the factory, without any app you installed. If the screen responds perfectly in that mode, the problem is proven to be software, and the cause is an app, almost always one using a screen overlay or an accessibility permission.

  1. With the phone on, hold the power button until the power menu appears.
  2. Touch and hold the Power off option until it offers to reboot into safe mode, then confirm.
  3. If touch will not cooperate for that, power the device down with the buttons and, when the manufacturer's logo appears, hold volume down until it finishes starting.
  4. You will see a Safe mode marker in a corner of the screen. Test the touch calmly.
  5. If it works properly, restart normally and uninstall the apps you added just before the problem started, one at a time.
  6. In settings, find the list of apps allowed to display over other apps and switch off any you do not recognise.

6Map the dead zones with pointer location

If only part of the screen ignores your finger, this feature shows exactly where touch is read and where it is not. It draws a mark at every touch, so you can run a finger across the whole screen and see where the mark disappears. A clearly defined dead strip is the signature of a physical fault in the digitiser.

  1. Open settings, go to About phone and tap the build number repeatedly until developer options are unlocked.
  2. Go back to settings, open System and enter Developer options.
  3. Turn on Show taps and also Pointer location.
  4. Drag your finger slowly across the whole screen, in horizontal and vertical lines, and watch where the mark vanishes.
  5. If the failure is always in the same strip, even after a restart, it is a hardware fault and no setting will correct it.
  6. Switch both features off after the test so the marks do not stay on screen.

7Free up space, update the system and clear the freezing app's cache

When the screen only freezes inside one specific app, or when storage is nearly full, the problem is not touch: it is the system running out of resources to draw the screen. Freeing space and updating usually puts a definitive end to that kind of intermittent freeze.

  1. In settings, open Storage and check how much free space is left. Below ten per cent of the total, Android becomes unstable.
  2. Delete large videos and photos, empty the gallery's bin and uninstall apps you do not use.
  3. Go to Settings, System, Software update and install anything pending.
  4. If the freeze always happens in the same app, open its details in settings, go into Storage and tap Clear cache.
  5. If that does not help, clear that app's data as well, remembering this wipes its preferences and will require signing in again.
  6. Take the memory card out and test without it: a faulty card freezes the system at random intervals.

8Last resort: factory reset and when to go to a repair shop

If safe mode works fine but normal use keeps freezing, a factory reset clears whatever setting or app is causing it. It erases everything on the device, so back up first. If even safe mode does not respond to touch, do not waste time on this: the problem is physical.

  1. Back up: check in your account settings that photos and contacts are synced and copy anything that is not.
  2. Make sure you know the password of the account used on the phone. Without it, the device can be locked after the reset.
  3. Go to Settings, System, Reset options and choose to erase all data.
  4. If touch does not respond well enough for that, look for the manufacturer's recovery mode, reachable with button combinations at power-on.
  5. Could not even reach that menu, or the dead strip is still there after the reset? Take it to an authorised repair centre and mention any drop or contact with water.

Frequently asked questions

You cannot say that yet. A deep freeze causes exactly this symptom and the forced restart in Solution 1 clears plenty of them. Hold the buttons for at least twenty seconds, and if there is still no reaction, charge for fifteen minutes and try again before concluding it is faulty.

When the failure is always in the same area and persists in safe mode, it is a physical digitiser fault and no software adjustment will fix it. Replacing the screen assembly is the way forward, and it is worth getting a quote first because on older phones the cost can approach the price of the device.

That is a classic symptom of a poor quality charger or cable injecting electrical noise that interferes with the touch reading. Test with the original charger and a different socket. If the problem disappears, the charger was to blame.

Connect the phone to a computer with the cable and see whether it appears as a device. Many phones also accept a USB mouse through an adapter, which lets you navigate and authorise the transfer. If the screen is completely dead, a repair shop can make the copy while the device is still unlocked.

Ordinary gloves do not work because the screen reads the electricity in your finger. Some phones have a touch sensitivity setting that helps with thin gloves and thick protectors, usually in the display section of settings. A regular pen will not work; only styluses made for touchscreens do.
