Quick answer

First identify the symptom: the icon sits grey with a frozen progress ring, the Get button does nothing, or an error message appears. A stuck download is nearly always fixed by pausing and resuming or closing the App Store (Solution 2). Install errors and unresponsive buttons are usually account or clock related: check that date and time are automatic (Solution 3) and sign out and back into your Apple Account (Solution 4). If the Get button is missing entirely, app installation may be blocked in Screen Time (Solution 6). Before anything, confirm you have free storage - with none, nothing downloads (Solution 1).

App Store Not Downloading Apps on iPhone: 8 Fixes in Order

What causes this problem

  • A download stuck on waiting because of a momentary App Store queue glitch, very common after a dropped connection.
  • Date, time or time zone not set automatically, which breaks the security check between the iPhone and Apple's servers.
  • An Apple Account session in a bad state: changed password, new terms not accepted, or a pending payment method.
  • iPhone storage full or nearly full, with no room for the app plus the temporary install files.
  • Content and privacy restrictions in Screen Time blocking app installation.
  • An unstable network, Wi-Fi with a sign-in portal, or an active VPN interfering with the connection to the store.
Before you begin
  • Check how much free space you have in Settings > General > iPhone Storage. An app needs considerably more room than its listed size while installing.
  • Note the exact symptom: frozen ring on the icon, unresponsive button, an on-screen error, or a store that loads nothing at all. Each leads down a different path.
  • Confirm other apps can reach the internet. If none can, the problem is the connection, not the App Store.
  • Have your Apple Account password handy, because two of the solutions ask you to sign in again.
  • If the iPhone is a work or school device, ask whoever manages it whether a management profile blocks installations.

Solutions, in the order to try them

1Confirm free storage and clear what you need

Without enough space the download simply will not move, sometimes with no clear message. Installing needs the app's size plus extra room to unpack the files, so a device running tight fails even when the app looks small.

  1. Open Settings > General > iPhone Storage and look at the bar at the top.
  2. If the margin is small, delete large videos, remove apps you do not use, and empty the recently deleted album in Photos.
  3. Use the suggestion to offload unused apps, which frees the app while keeping your data.
  4. Try the download again once you have cleared space.

2Pause and resume the download, or close the App Store

When the icon sits grey with a frozen progress ring, the download queue has stalled. Tapping the icon pauses it and tapping again resumes, which unblocks it most of the time. Closing the App Store entirely forces the app to rebuild the queue from scratch.

  1. Tap the downloading icon once to pause it and tap again to resume.
  2. If that does not help, press and hold the icon and choose the option to pause or cancel the download, then start again from the App Store.
  3. Swipe up from the bottom and hold in the middle of the screen to see open apps, then swipe the App Store up to close it.
  4. Open the App Store again and restart the download.

3Check that date, time and time zone are automatic

This is the silent suspect. The iPhone and Apple's servers check certificate validity using the device clock. If the date is wrong, even slightly, the connection to the store fails with generic messages that explain nothing. Setting everything to automatic fixes it immediately.

  1. Open Settings > General > Date & Time.
  2. Turn on Set Automatically.
  3. If it was already on, turn it off, wait a few seconds and turn it back on to force a fresh sync.
  4. Check that the time zone shown matches where you actually are.
  5. Go back to the App Store and try the download again.

4Sign out of your Apple Account and sign back in

The store session can end up in an invalid state after a password change, an account change or a server error. Signing out and back in recreates that session and clears a good share of install errors. Do this only in the media and purchases section of the App Store, which does not disconnect iCloud or delete anything on the device.

  1. Open the App Store and tap your photo or initials in the top right corner.
  2. Scroll to the bottom and tap Sign Out.
  3. Close the App Store, wait a few seconds and open it again.
  4. Tap the account icon and sign in with your Apple Account and password.
  5. Try downloading the app before making any other change.

5Clear account issues: payment and terms

Free apps still depend on an account in good standing. If there is a declined charge, an expired payment method or new terms waiting to be accepted, the store blocks downloads and does not always explain why on the screen you are looking at.

  1. In the App Store, tap your photo and go into the account area.
  2. Open the payment information section and confirm the method on file is valid.
  3. If you would rather not keep a card on file, check whether the none option for payment method is available in your region.
  4. Accept any terms and conditions that appear on screen.
  5. Look through your purchase history for a pending charge.

6Check Screen Time restrictions

If the Get button does not appear at all, or the App Store is missing from the home screen, the reason is usually a restriction switched on in Screen Time - sometimes set long ago and forgotten. That is the classic explanation on devices once used by a child or set up through family sharing.

  1. Open Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions.
  2. If restrictions are on, go into iTunes & App Store Purchases.
  3. Confirm Installing Apps is set to Allow.
  4. Go back and also check the allowed apps list, to make sure the App Store has not been hidden.
  5. If a Screen Time passcode is requested and you do not know it, you will need to recover it with the Apple Account used during setup.

7Switch networks, turn off the VPN and restart the iPhone

Larger downloads can fail on unstable networks or on ones that require signing in through a browser page. An active VPN also tends to interfere with the connection to the store. Testing on another network separates a connection problem from an account problem in a minute.

  1. Turn off the VPN, if one is enabled in Settings.
  2. Switch networks: if you were on Wi-Fi, try mobile data, and the other way around.
  3. Confirm in Settings > Cellular that the App Store is allowed to use mobile data.
  4. Turn the iPhone off and on and try again.
  5. If the problem persists on every network, use Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Network Settings. That erases saved Wi-Fi passwords, so have yours handy.

8Update iOS and check app compatibility

Apps require a minimum system version, and an out-of-date iPhone may get an incompatibility notice instead of an install button. On top of that, fixes for the store itself arrive through system updates. Back up first to be safe, and keep the device plugged in during the update.

  1. Open Settings > General > Software Update and install whatever is available.
  2. On the app's App Store page, scroll to the information section and check the compatibility listed.
  3. If the app requires a newer version than your iPhone supports, the store may offer the last compatible version when you have downloaded the app before.
  4. After updating, restart the device and try the download again.

iPhone on iOS 15 and 16 Confirmed
iPad on iPadOS The procedure is identical, but the App Store opens in a split layout and menus sit in different places

Menu names can change slightly between versions. If a step above does not match what you see on screen, the official support page from the manufacturer has the most current wording for your version.

Frequently asked questions

The download queue has stalled. Tap the icon to pause and tap again to resume, as described in Solution 2. If it still will not move, close the App Store from the open apps screen and restart the download from there.

Generic messages almost always come from the account or the clock. Start with Solution 3, setting date and time to automatic, then move to Solution 4, signing out and back into your Apple Account. Those two clear most cases.

No. Signing out through the App Store ends only the media and purchases session. Installed apps, photos and iCloud stay exactly as they were. You just need your password to sign in again.

That usually points to an install restriction enabled in Screen Time, or an app unavailable in your region. Check Solution 6 first. If restrictions are off, scroll the app page and read the compatibility section.

There are two common causes: the App Store may not be allowed to use mobile data under Settings > Cellular, or the app is large and the iPhone asks for confirmation before using your allowance. Solution 7 covers both.
